Winter Athletics Update

Last night, the District School Committee approved the recommendation of the school administration to cancel the winter 2020-2021 athletic season. As a school, we regret that this decision had to be made, but believe that it is in the best interest of our students and community to cancel the winter season. The inconsistency of athletic rules, the necessity of playing winter sports indoors, the difficulties of arranging travel for athletic teams and players, and the importance of prioritizing the technical and academic education and needs of our students led us to this decision.

We know that many of you will be disappointed, as are we. We are hopeful that continued work on Covid-19 vaccines and warmer weather in the springtime will allow us to offer some form of athletics later on this year, whether interscholastic or intramural. For the time being, this action is necessary to prioritize the safety of our student-athletes and coaches, as well as our entire community.

There are many variables that will need to be discussed, considered and approved in order for Blue Hills to safely sanction athletics in the springtime. Blue Hills has the safety of everyone involved first and foremost. Because of the complexity of this situation, everything is subject to change. Our goal over the next few months is to engage in healthy discussions with school department officials, athletic conference members and other local high schools to review the options for providing our students with most rewarding experience possible. Blue Hills will continue to work tirelessly to provide a realistic and safe athletic experience for all participants and remains committed to releasing updated information as details become available.

Sincerely,

Jill Rossetti, Superintendent
Geoff Zini, Principal
Ed Catabia, Director of Athletics
